YOUR CREDIT SCORE ISN’T ONE NUMBER ANYMORE

A 750 on your phone doesn't always mean the bank sees a 750.

Most of us grew up hearing:

“Get your FICO score up.”

But here's what many people don't know:

You don't have just ONE credit score.

There are three major credit bureaus:

Experian. Equifax. TransUnion.

Think of them as three different companies keeping a file on you.

They track things like

What accounts you have

How much you owe

Whether you pay on time

Collections

Credit inquiries

And their information can be slightly different.

That's why your score can be different depending on which credit report is being used.

SO WHAT IS FICO?

FICO is not a credit bureau.

FICO takes information from your credit report and uses a formula to turn it into a score.

And here's the crazy part:

There isn't just one FICO score either.

There are different FICO models for regular lending, auto loans, credit cards, mortgages and more.

So you might see

760 on your phone

while the car dealership sees:

725

That doesn't automatically mean somebody is lying.

They may simply be looking at a different scoring model or credit bureau.

THEN THERE'S VANTAGESCORE

VantageScore is another credit-scoring system.

You may have seen a VantageScore through a credit-monitoring app.

Newer scoring systems such as VantageScore 4.0 and FICO 10T can also pay attention to how your credit behavior changes over time.

In simple terms:

Are your balances going DOWN?

Or are they constantly going UP?

Your behavior matters — not just today's number.

HERE'S WHAT REALLY MATTERS

Stop worrying only about:

“What's my score?”

Start asking:

“WHAT'S ON MY CREDIT REPORT?”

Because your credit report is where the information behind those scores comes from.

Check for:

Late payments. High balances. Collections. Accounts you don't recognize.

Incorrect information.

And don't assume all three reports are identical.

YOU CAN CHECK ALL THREE FOR FREE

This is the part I really want people to remember.

Go to:

You can currently access your credit reports from Experian, Equifax and TransUnion for FREE every week.

These are your credit reports, not necessarily your credit scores.

That's fine.

Look at the information behind the score.

Pull all three.

Compare them.

Make sure everything belongs to you.

And if something is wrong, investigate it and dispute inaccurate information.

SC9 BOTTOM LINE

Credit isn't disappearing. It's changing.

FICO still matters.

VantageScore can matter.

But the number you see on your phone may NOT be the number your lender sees.

So don't spend your life obsessing over an 800.

Pay your bills on time. Keep debt under control. Check your reports. Fix mistakes. Protect your credit file.

Understand the system before you try to beat the system.

Because credit is a tool.

And ownership starts with knowing how to use the tools available to you.
